After being rejected by the army due to his sickly stature, he was chosen as the first test subject for the ‘Super Soldier’ serum. He was given a flag inspired costume and a bullet proof shield to fight for the US army. Later his shield is replaced by one made of adamantium steel and vibranium. He and sidekick Bucky Barnes are presumed dead trying to thwart Baron Zemo. Years later he is found and revived from suspended animation by the Avengers.

A subject of the Super Soldier program, he battled the Chitauri, an extraterrestrial race bent on taking over the planet. In an attack on their Iceland base, Captain America was presumed lost during an attempt to disarm a missile. Years later he was found by a S.H.I.E.L.D. funded marine biologists, in suspended animation. They revive him and convince him to join and lead The Ultimates.
